An executive MBA program is not only for individuals seeking to increase their level of education. These graduate programs focus heavily on specific topic areas, often one at a time, consisting of multiple sessions through the entire curriculum. The executive MBA program don’t seem to offer the same immersion as a traditional MBA program, but are specifically catered to working professionals.

One area which often facilitates questions among students considering a MBA is what the differences between a traditional program and an executive program. Due to the condensed nature of the executive MBA program, internships are not often available for students to take advantage of. Scholarships are not generally offered to students who choose the executive MBA program. The shortened curriculum does not always give students the option to choose an area of specialization through their chosen coursework. But given the differences between these two program types, they do each offer features and benefits which students should consider prior to enrolling.

Greater entrance flexibility for incoming students

Students often have the ability to choose their coursework or paths, or even specific instructors

Courses often offer greater flexibility with times and locations for students

Classes are condensed in terms of time, giving more students the option to enroll

Most programs offer an overview curriculum, giving a broad education in each of the major business disciplines for students

The time frame, often 2 years or less, is suitable for many students looking to obtain this designation quickly, but while also maintaining their current level of employment

Limitations to the Executive MBA Program

Some of the limitations to the executive MBA program include:

The curriculum requires a high level of discipline on behalf of the student, their respective employers and their family members

The requirement to maintain their employment and to complete the MBA program is intense; often 80-100 hours per week when combined
